BAYONNE – The Bayonne Fire Department put out a fire in the city’s business district on Monday, March 23.
Firefighters arrived at 1031 Broadway at 8:22 p.m. and were confronted with fire and heavy smoke emanating from the second-floor front and rear windows of the two-story frame structure, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Firefighters advanced fire hoses from the interior to the second floor, and operated additional hoses from an adjacent roof to gain control of the fire that caused substantial damage to the second floor,” Rogers said.
Beulah Gospel Tabernacle, a first-floor church, was damaged by smoke and water.
The building was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the fire.
The fire was brought under control in less than an hour.
Adjacent buildings that were only inches away from the fire were protected by the firefighters and were not damaged by fire, Rogers said
There were no reported injuries. The fire is under investigation.
