BAYONNE – The scheduled public unveiling of the mural honoring hometown hero Chuck Wepner on Saturday, March 21 has been cancelled because of the weather forecast for the area, according to Bayonne Community Development Department Assistant Director Samantha Howard.
However, a private, invitation-only reception for the project will go on as planned at the Bayonne Community Museum, 9th Street and Broadway. The reception will now take place at 1:30 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled 3 p.m. time.
An announcement will be made about when the mural, painted on a parachute-like cloth, will be affixed to its permanent location on the wall of Andrew’s Café, 33rd Street and Broadway, Howard said.
The Community Development-sponsored mural was created to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Wepner’s title bout with then-world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali on March 24, 1975 in Richfield, Ohio.
