Board of Education adds extra monthly meeting

In a response to criticism that the public did not have enough access to Bayonne Board of Education issues and decision making, the board has decided to go back to its previous two-meeting a month schedule.
The board will now hold an open workshop, at which the public can attend but not participate, midway through the month. On the day of the board’s regular monthly meeting, the board will hold a second open workshop immediately prior to the public meeting.
Third Ward Councilman Gary La Pelusa and others had voiced their displeasure with the previous arrangement, which included a public agenda made available only on the day the regular monthly meeting was held.
“We did listen to things at the public meeting and are making some adjustments,” said Board Secretary Dr. Gary Maita in announcing the addition at the board’s last meeting.

Nine residents displaced by Avenue A blaze

Bayonne firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire on Avenue A on Sunday, March 15 and nine tenants were displaced.
At 6:46 p.m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to 696 Ave. A on the report of a kitchen fire in a three-story frame house.
“Arriving firefighters confronted fire in a kitchen on the first floor, and fire traveling an interior wall to the second and third floors,” said Fire Chief Gregory Rogers. “Firefighters advanced fire hoses to all three floors and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.”
The first and second floors suffered the most fire damage. All three floors sustained smoke and water damage as well.
There were no reported injuries.
The fire investigator determined that the fire originated in the first-floor kitchen. The fire was deemed accidental, the result of unattended cooking on the range top.
