NORTH BERGEN – Mayor Nicholas Sacco officially launched his campaign for the upcoming municipal election last night at North Bergen’s Schuetzen Hall. Attending the event was a who’s-who of local and regional politicans offering their support and endorsement to the mayor.
Among those speaking strongly on behalf of the mayor were Congressman Albio Sires, State Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, New Jersey Democratic State Committee and Passaic County Democratic Chairman John Currie, and Bergen County Democratic Chairman Lou Stellato.
State Senator and Union City Mayor Brian Stack, a longtime rival of Sacco, attended the event and offered his support for Sacco’s campaign. Also speaking were Sacco’s running mates, current Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Frank Gargiulo, and Allen Pascual, as well as Board of Education President Julio Marenco, who is running for the fifth seat, to be vacated when current commissioner Theresa Ferraro retires at the end of her term.
A total of 8,000 signatures were collected in support of the candidates in three weeks.
Outside the building it was a very different story, as protesters with signs decrying the current administration blocked the entrance to the parking lot and shouted at attendees who were forced to cross through the picket line.
Running for mayor against Sacco is local businessman Larry Wainstein, who announced his ticket on Friday.
The election takes place on May 12.
