GORDON, BERNARD F.

A funeral mass was celebrated Feb. 21 at Our Lady of Mercy Church for Bernard F. Gordon, 66, son of the late Marjorie C. (Crown) and Bernard A. Gordon. He died Feb. 14 at Holy Cross Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was born, raised and has been a lifelong resident of the Greenville section of Jersey City. Bernie was married to Barbara Morley Gordon for 40 years. They have two sons, Bernie Jr. and partner Marc, Jamie and daughter-in-law Tara. Bernie was blessed with a grandson, Connor, in 2012. He also leaves behind a sister, Kathleen and Ken Brack, a brother Artie and Peggy Gordon, a brother-in-law, Jim and Eleanor Morley, along with many nieces and nephews. They all continue to remain Jersey City residents along with many of their extended family members.
In 1999, Bernie started Hudson Pool Management. He was president and chief financial officer. He brought Hudson Pool to many levels in a short time, expanding throughout New Jersey and New York. He offered many career opportunities to both young and old. Bernie worked for the Hudson County Schools of Technology for over 20 years, retiring in 2010. Here he was mentor in their “Schools to Career Program” where he provided career counseling, skills assessment and training, and placed students in successful internship assignments and possible career long jobs.
Bernie also served as commissioner of Jersey City Employment and Training Commission. He was the elected chairman of the board for two terms. Bernie has worked with many local organizations to provide assistance to those less fortunate. He has received the Community Volunteer of the Year by the Hudson Milestones with their William C. LaGreca Award. He was also the recipient of the Rotary Club of Hudson County Community Service Award. Bernie had a strong passion for sports. He coached many teams from PAL to College Little League to Hudson Catholic High School. He continued to be a huge supporter of Hudson Catholic and their sports programs.
