BAYONNE – City firefighters rescued two trapped occupants of an Avenue C residence and extinguished the two-alarm blaze within 40 minutes on Monday, Feb. 23.
At 1:27 a.m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 1109 Ave. C.
Arriving firefighters were confronted with heavy fire blowing out the second floor window of a 2½-story frame building, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Reports came in of a woman trapped on the third floor. Firefighters were able to get to the occupant on the third floor, and guide her to safety, along with another occupant found in the hallway,” Rogers said.
The remaining occupants self-evacuated. There were no reported injuries.
Firefighters stretched fire hoses into the building and quickly extinguished the fire that was found in a second-floor bedroom. The fire was declared under control at 2:05 a.m.
The blaze caused significant fire damage to the second-floor apartment, and smoke damage throughout the building.
Thirteen occupants were displaced by the blaze, and they sought shelter with family and friends. A dog was also evacuated from the building.
Representatives of the Bayonne Police, Building, and Public Works departments responded to the scene.
The fire investigator determined that the fire originated on the second floor in the front bedroom, and was caused by a portable electrical space heater that was being used in the bedroom, Rogers said.
The fire was ruled accidental.
