Dear Editor:
With Hoboken finally receiving its fair share of snow in 2015, once again its residents have been put to the test to combat the wintry conditions. This year has gone quite smoothly as far as the roads go with steady plowing and salting, however it is the condition of the sidewalks that has me most concerned.
Mother’s pushing strollers, children walking to school, the elderly out to get a cup of coffee, it’s an accident waiting to happen.
Yet with puddles of slush, snow and icy nighttime conditions, who else but residents and storeowners have been appointed the job of removing this wintry mess? I believe I have found the perfect solution. The Hoboken Parking Utility. Is the HPU exempt from having to possibly contribute to the town in ways that don’t involve unreasonable tickets and unnecessary boots? Or could they simply gain back some positive affinity with the city by throwing a few shovels in their constantly visible, white patrolling vans and clear these trouble area’s missed by plow’s, even throw down some salt as needed?
It would be an improvement from the HPU folks I see walking around conversing on cell phones constantly and blindly wading through these treacherous sidewalks as they ding each resident vehicle to the tune of $80-$200 a pop. It’s a simple suggestion and at least it will make the sidewalks safer for residents in a city where people walk just about everywhere.
