BAYONNE – One down and 1,081 to go.
During the Thursday, Feb. 5 six-hour closure of the Bayonne Bridge, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey’s contractor installed the first new roadway segment at the northernmost pier in Bayonne, according to Port Authority spokesman Chris Valens.
“In total, there’ll be 541 roadway segments on the new northbound roadway and another 541 for the southbound,” Valens said.
When completed, the “Raise the Roadway” project will have lifted the span’s roadway 65 feet higher, to allow bigger vessels to pass underneath. The larger ships are expected in a few years.
