A memorial service celebrating the life of Samuel Romano, 88, will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, from 2-4 p.m. in the John Dunn Dining Room of Santa Barbara City College, 721 Cliff Drive, Santa Barbara, Calif. The former Jersey City resident passed away Jan. 14.
He was born Jan. 24, 1927 in a house at Newark Avenue and Franklin Street and grew up on Sherman Avenue in Jersey City Heights, attending local schools. He attended William L. Dickinson High School, Jersey City, but left six months before graduation to join the U.S. Navy and serve during World War II in the Pacific theater, completing high school after the war ended. He graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He was employed by General Motors and spent one year in Detroit before he was transferred to work for AC Delco in Santa Barbara in 1961. As a research engineer, he played a key role in developing technology used in the NASA lunar space program. He conceived and produced the Lunar Roving Vehicle used on the Apollo Missions 15, 16 and 17 to the moon.
He was predeceased by his wife Dolores Fitzsimons. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marge (nee Jette) Romano; her children Tim of Los Olivos, Calif; Laurie of Santa Barbara, and Mariliz of Tonasket, Wash; plus eight grandchildren; and a son by his first marriage, Clifford, of Madera, Calif.; his children Brandon and Michelle; and great grandson, Lucas.
