Let it snow

Fears of ‘historic’ blizzard kept people inside

Call it meh-mageddon.
The streets of Weehawken on Monday were covered with snow, white and peaceful and quiet, but the “historic” blizzard predicted by weather forecasters for Tuesday failed to materialize.
Still, even a moderate snowstorm is a good excuse to skip work or school, stay indoors, and just relax and contemplate the wonders of nature from inside the warmth of home.
Mayor Richard Turner said the town got eight to 10 inches in total. He said that while the Department of Public Works was prepared, he was glad they didn’t get the feared 1 to 2 feet of snow on Tuesday.
“Everyone’s pretty good with 8 to 10 inches,” he said. “When you start getting two feet, you have to deal with a potentially 24 inches of snow much differently. Our DPW traditionally does a tremendous job and they were ready for it, but with narrow streets, drifts three to four feet, you’re as ready as you can be for the unforeseen.”
Predictions became more dire on Sunday, and schools and businesses closed early Monday, making the cleanup easier. The state of New Jersey banned cars from the streets Monday night. Most of the snow occurred that night with only flurries the next day.
“Since they shut everything down, the DPW could do what they needed to do and didn’t have to worry about people stuck,” Turner said. “Having the tunnel closed was a big benefit. People sometimes end up on local streets, lost and stuck.”
