D’AMICO, SEBASTIAN

A funeral mass was offered Jan. 27 at St. Anne’s Church, Jersey City, for Sebastian “Chips” D’Amico, 82, a long time Jersey City humanitarian. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Jan. 23. Sebastian, well known as “Chips,” was born in Hoboken and lived most his life in Jersey City. He was employed by Jersey City Public Schools for 52 years in various positions. He was first president of NJEA: Non-instructional, Administrators and Supervisors Association. He was a member of the board of Hudson County Vocational Technical School at various times since 1980 serving as acting secretary, business manager, vice president and president of the board. He was a member of Unico National and served as president and district governor of District III. For many years, he served as chairman for the Hudson County Planning Board, Unico Jersey City Housing Inc. and was vice chairman of the Jersey City Planning Board. He was first president of Academy House Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center and a member of the Board for Hudson County Retarded Citizens Association. He was also commissioner of the Jersey City Parking Authority. A member of the Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City, he also was an aide to Assemblyman Charles Mainor. He was awarded “Man of the Year” by the NAACP, Hoboken Chapter. All his life, he enjoyed politics and contributing to the enrichment of Jersey City, though his passion was his family, to his wife, children and cherishing every moment with his two grandsons.
Sebastian was the husband of 58 years to Elena (nee Piromalli). He was the father of Charles D’Amico Esq. and his wife Kathleen Walrod Esq., Michael D’Amico and Akiko Stojek, Sebastian D’Amico, Jr., DMD, and his wife Carmela. He is also the grandfather of Angelo and Dante D’Amico. He was the brother of Anthony D’Amico and the late Joseph D’Amico and Josephine Canavari.
