Tallest building in the state proposed for Jersey City
Already home to seven of the state’s ten tallest buildings, the City of Jersey City announced this week a plan for a 95-story residential tower which, at 950 feet, would be “by far the tallest building in New Jersey, dramatically remaking the Jersey City skyline,” according to Mayor Steven M. Fulop.
The 760-unit condominium would be developed by China Overseas America, Inc., and located on a site at 99 Hudson St. The project will include approximately 18,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, and provide for additional public spaces and plazas including 7,365 square feet of passive park space.
The Jersey City Planning Board voted on a redevelopment plan change on Tuesday night (Jan.20) before the project goes to the City Council on Feb. 10 for a vote on final site plan approval, with China Overseas America, Inc. anticipating construction to commence in late spring.
“This is another milestone moment for Jersey City,” said Mayor Fulop. “Our plan here is to continue building a world class skyline and to continue leading the region in job creation with projects like this, and we couldn’t be more excited to attract hundreds of millions of dollars of investment into the city. This project is going to further put Jersey City on the map.”
Currently the tallest building in New Jersey is in Jersey City, the Goldman Sachs tower at 781 feet at 30 Hudson Street. Trump Plaza, at 532 feet, is the state’s tallest residential building, also in Jersey City. One of the three towers being developed as part of the Journal Squared Project by KRE is expected to be the second tallest residential building in the state behind 99 Hudson St. at 729 feet when completed.
Liberty Science Center plans expansion
The Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) this week officially designated Liberty Science Center as the master developer for 16 acres of city-owned land adjacent to Liberty Science Center.
This is the first and significant step in a commitment to support Liberty Science Center as the premier not-for-profit interactive science and technology center in the region, said a statement from City Hall. The land that the city has committed to this project is valued at more than $20 million dollars.
“The city designating this land to Liberty Science Center is a major departure from past practices of selling property to private developers and instead speaks to the city’s commitment to growing Liberty Science Center as we create a world class city,” said Mayor Steven M. Fulop.
Fulop joins national coalition suit in support of immigration reform
Mayor Steven M. Fulop has joined Cities United for Immigration Action, a national coalition of mayors, in filing an amicus brief against a federal lawsuit that seeks to halt implementation of President Obama’s executive action on immigration that would shield approximately 4 million undocumented immigrants from deportation.
”Jersey City, home to the Statue of Liberty, has one of the most diverse communities in the nation,” said Fulop. “Immigration reform is about creating pathways to citizenship for these thousands of hardworking members of our community, many we know as friends and neighbors. Delaying this important executive action by President Obama only hurts our residents and our cities. We will stand together as mayors to challenge these opponents of immigration reform.”
President Obama’s executive action on immigration, announced in November, provides for the parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to request deferred action and employment authorization for three years, provided they have lived in the United States continuously since Jan. 1, 2010, and pass required background checks. This measure is expected to protect approximately 4 million undocumented immigrants who currently live and work in the United States from deportation and the fear of being separated from their children and families.
Art House Productions gets donation from Goldman Sachs
Art House Productions, a hub of the creative community in Jersey City, has announced that it has received a grant from global investment banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs for the installation of a lighting grid in its new theater at 136 Magnolia Ave. in Journal Square.
The theater presents a range of programming, from professional plays and music concerts to musicals for youth and educational classes. Art House moved into its new space over the summer and has been putting the finishing touches on its 99-seat black box theater.
Christine Goodman, executive director of Art House Productions says, “We are honored to partner with Goldman Sachs and we are looking forward to presenting plays in a fully-functional, well-lit space, thanks to this generous support.”
Art House partnered with Goldman Sachs in July 2014 for their 10th Anniversary Student Art Project. Through this program, middle school students from across Jersey City created artwork that is now on view outside of Goldman Sachs’ 30 Hudson St. office along the waterfront.
Goldman Sachs has also been a longstanding supporter of Art House’s annual fundraiser, SNOW BALL, which will be held on Jan. 24.
Art House aims to support artists in the creation and presentation of new work, encourage artistic growth and experimentation across all mediums, and foster a widespread appreciation for the arts in the community. Art House Productions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. If you would like more information about their programs, please visit their website at www.arthouseproductions.org.
