BROMIRSKI, WILLIAM L.

A funeral mass was offered Jan. 24 at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, Jersey City, for William L. Bromirski, 80, director of the Bromirski Funeral Home. He passed away Jan. 18. He was known for his devotion to his family, his business, his church, his military unit, and to Jersey City, which he served for over 30 years as a former commissioner of the Planning Board.
He was the son of Edward and Wanda Bromirski. A graduate of Lincoln High School and St. Peter’s College, he joined the Air National Guard while still in his teens and was a member of the 108th Tactical Fighter Squadron. He remained an active Air Force guardsman for 39 years, retiring at the rank of master sergeant. He traveled with his unit across the globe and around the United States. His unit was activated for a year in Chaumont, France under President Kennedy. He spent summer camps in a variety of places, Norway, Greece, Ecuador, Savannah, Cape Cod, and one of his favorite places, Las Vegas.
After receiving his funeral director’s license, Bromirski followed in his father’s footsteps and became the fourth generation to operate their family funeral establishment. He was the manager of the business and worked for many years with his father, and then with both of his sisters. He was a member of the NJ National, State, and Hudson County Funeral Directors Assns. and he was a past president in the county. He was known for treating all bereaved families with empathy and professionalism while guiding them through one of their darkest hours.
Involving himself in the fast-growing development of Jersey City, Bromirski was a commissioner for of the Jersey City Planning Board, and served as chairman and vice chairman. He saw many changes throughout his life and was proud to have played an integral part in the growth and revitalization of the waterfront.
All of his life was spent as a parishioner of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church. He was a devout Catholic and very active in parish affairs. He was a member of the OLC Choir, Holy Name Society, and OLC Seniors. He was actively involved in the running of the parish carnivals, a founding member of the OLC Parish Council, and for many years, he headed the OLC Brown Jug Bingo.
The most important aspect of his life was his love and devotion to his family, taking them to a Yankee game or to see the Rangers, playing Santa at Xmas for family and school children, or driving to Disney World, Amish Country, or visiting relatives in California, Bromirski loved to vacation with his family, especially if there was a stopover in Las Vegas, or Atlantic City so that he could play Keno, his favorite game. They called him the “Keno King.”
Bromirski was always ready with a piece of advice, a helping hand, or just a good deed. He lived a rich and full life and his footprint here on earth will be missed but not forgotten. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Dorothy (Doris)nee Hyjek; daughters Dorothy Wojcik and Valerie Piccarillo and her husband Salvatore, and their son the late Edward John Bromirski; his grandchildren Jonathan and wife Angelisa Wojcik, and Nicole Wojcik and his great grandson Octavius Jude. He was the brother of Barbara Ann Bromirski and Melanie Bromirski Zazula and her husband William; brother-in-law to Walter Hyjek and his wife Ewa and Constance Hyjek Piatkowski and her husband the late Dennis Piatkowski; uncle to Walter John and his wife Michelle Piatkowski and Michael and his wife Kristin Piatkowski, Christine and Michelle Hyjek; great uncle to Trevor and Lyla Piatkowski, as is also survived by numerous godchildren, cousins, and friends.
