Port Authority prepares for nor’easter

THE REGION – A northeast winter storm bringing snow, ice and rain is expected to hit the New York-New Jersey region beginning early Saturday morning. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will deploy extra staff and has assembled snow equipment to handle what forecasters say could result in hazardous travel conditions at the agency’s airports, tunnels, bridges and PATH system.
According to current forecasts, most areas of the New York-New Jersey region will see snow beginning around 3 a.m. Saturday, changing to a wintery icy mix then rain as the Nor’Easter tracks up the East Coast, with the worst conditions occurring tomorrow morning.
In advance of the snow, the Port Authority is prepared to deploy extra personnel at all of its facilities, which is the normal course of operations during winter weather events. The airports, bridges, tunnels and PATH system have snow desks where key personnel analyze weather reports and deploy staff and equipment.
The Port Authority urges air and bus travelers to check with their carriers before going to the airport or bus terminals to confirm whether their plane or bus will depart and scheduled departure times. The agency also may impose speed restrictions on its crossings if weather conditions warrant.
Due to the inclement weather, the weekend closings scheduled for the Bayonne Bridge have been cancelled.
