Johnson Spurs chargers to victory

Getting off to a fast start, the (2-0) Eagles looked to gain a foothold atop the JCC of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Sr. Division as they took on the (1-2) Chargers. With the new “Returnable Interception” rule in effect for the first time this season, defensive blocks have been drooling over a chance to return a “pick” for points. With no score, the Chargers’ James Johnson had the first of five interceptions to put his squad in scoring position. One play after the turnover Johnson put the Chargers up 6-0 with a 15 yard TD grab. Down 6 – zip, the Eagles’ Anthony Minotto reeled in his first of three “picks” on the day to halt the Chargers’ offense. Unable to cash in, the Eagles turned the ball over on downs and the Chargers’ James Johnson racked up 8 more points with a 25 yard TD swamper and a two point catch. Trailing 14-0, this time the Eagles turned a Minotto interception into points as Ryan Ballance hauled in a TD dart while Minotto added a two point snare making it 14-8, Chargers. With the Chargers back on the march, the Eagles’ Minotto continued to donate the air space as he picked off yet another Chargers’ pass but once again the Eagles’ offense stalled this time at the hands of Brandon Kobryn who pilfered an Eagles’ toss to bail out his Chargers squad. Hoping to gain some breathing room, the Chargers went to work with Jaden Subacz, Kasper Hooks, and Kevin Aguilar rushing the ball into Eagles’ territory. Stalled at 3rd and goal, the Chargers hit paydirt as their league leading scorer Kevin Aguilar made a leaping TD catch followed by a Johnson 2 point run to make it 22-8, Chargers. As their defense did its job, the Eagles’ offense showed signs of life as Jacob Kowal, Erik Solis, and Chris Ballance bulled the ball up court but the Chargers’ defense refused to surrender another point as the Chargers handed the Eagles their first loss.
