SECAUCUS – It’s no joke.
Secaucus police officers, the Hudson County sheriff’s department, and the New Jersey state police were all called to the scene of a zombie gathering at the Meadowlands Convention Center on Saturday, Dec. 13, because the event was so popular that thousands of extra people attended.
It was the first day of the Walker Stalker convention, dedicated to the popular cable TV show The Walking Dead. Organizers sold 7,000 tickets each day, according to the Secaucus mayor’s office. However, the convention center is only supposed to hold 2,000 people – living, dead, or otherwise.
Traffic was snarled in the area and a roadway had to be closed because no more cars could get in.
“It was pretty crazy,” said one vendor. “All I wanted to do was to go to my hotel and go to the bathroom because the bathroom lines were so long. I was told they can’t let me out. They said, ‘If you go out you’re not getting back in. You’re a vendor; you need to be in there. Just wait on line for the bathroom.’ ”
The organizers were fined $3,000 [by the town of Secaucus] for the overcrowding, said Secaucus Councilman Tom Clancy, and will also be responsible for the cost of bringing in the additional policemen to cover the event.
An event attendee called it “hairy,” and said, “They had some things to work out with crowds.”
“I’ve never seen such fandom as for The Walking Dead,” said convention guest Lori Cardille, star of the film Day of the Dead. “It’s like the Beatles.”
