UNION CITY – A fundraiser will be held at on Friday, Dec. 12 from 4 to 10 p.m. at Angelo’s Café, 4215 Park Ave. for the Viruet family. Brothers Michael, 20, and Adrian, 11, were walking home from a movie on Nov. 14 when they were both struck by a driver who then fled the scene.
Michael experienced facial fractures including having his nose broken from hitting his head on the windshield. After having his leg amputated, he experienced chronic issues with his lungs and kidneys and later died in the hospital. Adrian was thrown through the air by the impact of the vehicle and was impaled on a fence. He had a cracked skull and underwent brain surgery. He also suffered a fractured left wrist and broken right femur as a result of the accident.
The driver, Rogelio Chavix-Tacen, 38, of Guatemala, was tracked down last week hiding under a relative’s bed in Maryland and was arrested. He is being held in Hudson County Jail on $700,000 bail.
The fundraiser is sponsored by Union City PBA Local #8 and is intended to provide support to the family in their time of need. Tickets cost $20, which entitles attendees to unlimited hot dogs and refreshments.
