WEST NEW YORK — Law enforcement officers from West New York will be cracking down on drunk drivers as part of the 2014 Holiday crackdown “Drive Sober or Get Pulled over” campaign, official announced this week.
The program began on Dec. 5 and will run through Jan. 2, 2015 and has state and local enforcement officers conducting sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols, looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.
This is part of a national campaign designed to raise awareness about the dangerous of drinking and driving.
More than 10,000 are killed annually in the United States as a result of alcohol-impaired driving, statistics show. In 2013, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for 22 percent of New Jersey motor vehicle fatalities.
West New York officials said those planning to go out and drink during the holidays should assign a designated driver, who does not drink during these trips. Another option would be to take mass transit, a taxi or ask a sober friend to drive you home, if you are impaired while out. You can also spend the night wherever you are at the moment. To report an impaired drive, you can dial #77.
