BAYONNE – Hold on to your cats! And keep other pets (and kids) indoors. A resident of Bayonne was apparently trying to pick up a stray kitten in the area of First Street and Kennedy Blvd. on Tuesday morning when he or she got bitten. Testing showed that the cat had rabies, a potentially fatal disease.
Anyone bitten by an animal should be tested immediately so they can get the proper treatment in time. It may save their life. It’s important to stay away from animals who display symptoms.
The city would not release the resident’s age or gender, said a story on NJ.com.
The story quoted Mayor James Davis as saying, “”The city of Bayonne is being proactive on this important public health concern. We are taking appropriate measures to advise residents of the problem. The health officer and other municipal officials are following up in the downtown area to see whether any other animals in the area have rabies.”
Officials encouraged residents to maintain a close watch over their animals and keep them indoors. Also, avoid contact with strays.
The story also advised residents to “Contact the City of Bayonne if you notice unusual behavior by animals that live outside. During weekday business hours, call the Health Division at 201-858-6100. On nights and weekends, call the Bayonne Police Department at 201-858-6900.”
