Man dies in freak accident

A worker delivering gypsum board to a construction site on Christopher Columbus Drive on Monday, Nov. 3, was struck in the head by a 1-pound tape measure and died shortly afterward.
Jersey City police found the man lying on the ground in front of the construction site after he was struck by a measuring tape that had fallen from the 50th floor of the building.
He had stopped his vehicle and stuck his head out the window to talk to someone when he was struck by the falling tape measure, said the police report. He was not wearing a hard hat, according to the police.
He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center at about 10 a.m. where he was treated for his head injury. The police report said the victim also suffered cardiac arrest while being treated.

Veterans Day events schedule announced

The Hudson County Office of Veterans Affairs in conjunction with the Hudson County Community College will sponsor a Veterans Resource Fair/Health Fair on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Monday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. a Hudson County Distinguished Service Medal Ceremony will be held at the Herbert-Joyce VFW Post 226 Veterans Museum located at 16-18 W. Ninth St. in Bayonne. Twenty veterans will receive medals that evening.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11 New Jersey City University will hold a veterans service at 9 a.m. Harsimus Cove Cemetery will hold their service at 1 pm.
Bayonne veterans will join the Bayonne City Council at City Hall for their program starting at 6 p.m.

Freeholders approve $6 million in grants for towns and community organizations

The Hudson County Board of Freeholders has approved awards of competitive contracts for the operation, administration, and management of social services programs for 2015 by the Hudson County Office of Aging. The grant will be for the term of Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2015. The grant amount is $6,184,879.
In their announcement, the Board of Freeholders stressed their commitment to provide the necessary resources to assist municipalities, community organizations, and non-profit organizations of Hudson County dealing with issues pertaining to aging, disability and health.

Naturalization ceremony held in Jersey City

Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, in partnership with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), conducted a Naturalization Ceremony in honor of Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 7 at the City Hall council chambers.
“I am proud to host for a second time, the naturalization ceremony of 31 new citizens here in Jersey City,” Fulop said. “This momentous occasion is a reflection of the diversity of our community and the importance of the naturalization process. It is through the work of USCIS and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion that individuals are given the opportunity to succeed.”
The Naturalization Ceremony was the second to ever take place in Jersey City’s City Hall, a city often referred to as America’s Golden Door, according to a release from the city.
Of the 31 naturalization candidates who were from New Jersey, 25 reside in Jersey City, and originate from the following 16 countries: Colombia, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Ecuador, Ghana, Guyana, Haiti, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Sierra Leone, Slovakia, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom. Among the 31 citizenship candidates, there are several current or retired members of the U.S. military.

Hudson County CASA needs volunteers

Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA is currently recruiting volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to insure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes.
CASA (court appointed special advocate) and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for the judges and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system.
Please attend an information session to learn more about the program and the role of its volunteers. A session will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 901 of the Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City.

Bollywood music concert to be held in Jersey City

Vision Builders will host a benefit gala concert of golden era Hindi film music at Saint Peter’s University’s Duncan Family Sky Room at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. The concert will feature a concert of golden classics and contemporary favorite Hindi film music by Sa Re Ga Ma winner Sanjeev Ramabhardan and his troupe.
