Meadowlands Hospital-sponsored health plan shutting down

SECAUCUS – Meadowlands Hospital launched the TruPlan health plan in 2013. This week the hospital announced it is winding down the plan – at least temporarily. Designed as a multiple-employer health plan, it failed to attract enough members beyond the hospital itself to make the program viable. TruPlan will cease operations by the end of the year.
A spokesman for the hospital said the plan may be reactivated in six months to a year, once the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented.
Outside the hospital, about 30 businesses use TruPlan. Most of them are small businesses in the Secaucus area, with few employees. The employees were notified in October that they must find alternative health coverage beginning in January.
Employees of the hospital will be moved to a self-insured health plan at the hospital.
