School board election results in Hoboken, Jersey City, West New York, Bayonne coming in, and more…

HUDSON COUNTY — The results in various school board elections and regional elections were still coming in at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday night. Some of those are listed below. For up to the minute results, keep watching here or check out the county election website using this link.

In Hoboken, two of the three incumbents on the school board — Monica Stromwell and Peter Biancamano (from different tickets) — won in preliminary results, but absentee ballots, provisional ballots, and challenges may change close results. Political newcomer Sharon Angley was also among the top three finishers. Antonio Gray and Brian Murray were neck and neck and in the fourth and fifth slots respectively.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer had endorsed Stromwell, Angley, and Gray, but that slate’s changing or unclear stances on a heated issue about charter schools may have kept the slate from sweeping the votes among parents. At the same time, the anti-Zimmer vote was split among two different slates of candidates, so they were weakened by infighting.
Sources said that some of the anti-City Hall candidates had harvested large vote-by-mail hauls, something that will become clear in the next few days.
In Jersey City, the candidates supported by the teacher’s union soundly defeated candidates backed by Parents for Progress. Lorenzo Richardson, Gerald Lyons, and Joel Torres defeated Incumbents Carol Harrison-Arnold and Bertram C. Okpokwaski, and other candidates to fill three seats on the Jersey City Board of Education. Early reports suggested that the Society Hill area had low turnout, key to the other ticket, Parents for Progress, needed to win. With more than 90 percent of the districts reporting, the three candidates had near twice as many votes as their opponents. (Pictured is incumbent Lorenzo Richardson, who led all voting).
In West New York, voters waited to see if allies of Mayor Felix Roque would win re-election, or be beaten back by critics.
