A funeral mass was offered Oct. 21 at St. Francis R.C. Church, Hoboken, for Salvatore “Buddy” DeVincenzo, 79. He passed away Oct. 15 surrounded by his family. Salvatore was born in Hoboken to Anthony “Tony Mike” and Florence DeVincenzo. Buddy loved spending every day of his life with his family and friends, especially on the piers of his restaurants or crabbing in the Hudson River. Buddy was very proud of his father’s life story being the inspiration for the Budd Schulberg novel ‘Waterfront’ and the motion picture ‘On the Waterfront.” As a young man, he worked the family owned Grotto Restaurant in Hoboken, and then opened his own restaurants, including On the Waterfront, The Upper Deck and Buddy’s Captain’s Roost in Edgewater. Buddy later retired to his love for cars, and owned and operated the 9W Carwash in Englewood Cliffs, and Buddy’s Carwash in Teaneck. He enjoyed watching and playing sports and also always enjoyed a good movie. He was the father to six children, Anthony, Sal, David, John, Danielle and Andrew DeVincenzo. brother of Kathryn DeVincenzo, Anthony DeVincenzo and the late Vito DeVincenzo. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Anthony, Max, and Sophia DeVincenzo, as well as nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
