HOBOKEN — Did you think only rich people were left in Hoboken? You thought wrong.
Dozens of people – some with umbrellas – camped out on Tuesday evening to secure a good spot on line for a Section 8 housing voucher list that was going to be opened on Wednesday for the first time in many years.
The line formed early Tuesday outside of the Elks Lodge at 1005 Washington St. With heavy rains expected, only the hardiest souls may wind up with the federal vouchers, which will help pay their rents for landlords who accept them — provided the applicants meet low-income requirements.
In Hoboken, rents have risen drastically over the years as young professionals have moved in. The mile-square city still has low-income housing projects in the southwest part of town, as well as a few buildings containing moderate income housing.
