Assistance still available for Sandy recovery

Hudson County was one of the nine counties in NJ most affected by Superstorm Sandy. Although it has been almost two years since the storm, there are still people in our community that have not yet fully recovered and are not aware that there are still resources available to help them.
Hudson Regional Health Commission (HRHC) has received a Social Services Block Grant and in cooperation with the Hudson County Long Term Recovery Committee (HCLTRC) is trying to spread the word and let people know that there are resources available to help them. Residents should be aware that if they have not yet recovered there is money available to help them fix their homes, or replace a vehicle or furniture that was damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy. There is mental health counseling available as well.
Anyone who still needs assistance can call 211 to connect with a case manager who will help guide them through the process. Please share this message with everyone: post it to Facebook, on websites, and Tweet that the recovery effort is still taking place in Hudson County.
HCLTRC is a voluntary organization committed to relief, recovery, and rebuilding associated with Superstorm Sandy in Hudson County. The goal of the HCLTRC is to provide coordinated management of long-term recovery assistance to residents of Hudson County who have been affected by the storm and who do not have the personal resources necessary to help return their lives to normalcy.

Marsh discovery trail reopened following storm damage

On Wednesday, Sept. 24 the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) celebrated the long-awaited reopening of the Marsh Discovery Trail, the most popular walkway in DeKorte Park. The trail incurred extensive damage during Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Originally opened in 1991, the Marsh Discovery Trail attracts thousands of nature lovers, bird watchers, school children, and those simply looking for a tranquil place for relaxation and reflection.
The half-mile boardwalk loop extends over DeKorte Park’s Shorebird Pool and includes four bird-blinds, two study docks, two shaded classrooms, two open classrooms and several seating areas. The Marsh Discovery Trail, one of the first barrier-free marsh nature trails constructed in the State of New Jersey, is a vital component of field-based environmental education programs offered by the NJMC’s Meadowlands Environment Center (MEC). Educators use the path as a teaching tool for the thousands of students in Grades K-12 who participate in MEC classes each year. Students learn about the marsh environment in the walkway’s shaded and open classroom areas and use its study docks to dip net for organisms and collect water samples.
The NJMC, in partnership with the Bergen County Audubon Society, offers free, twice-monthly guided nature walks throughout the Meadowlands region, including the Marsh Discovery Trail. The trail is a great place to see Least Bitterns, Marsh Wrens, and other waterfowl in the Shorebird Pool, and Red-winged Blackbirds, and various raptors overhead during all seasons.
The Marsh Discovery Trail, like DeKorte Park, is open from 8 a.m. to dusk year-round excluding holidays. It may be accessed through the main entrance gate located along the Shorewalk, a short walk from the Meadowlands Environment Center; or from the mid-point of the Transco Trail.

Nature walk is on Oct. 5

The free two-hour first-Sunday-of-the-month nature walk of Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus features raptors, waterfowl and fall migrants. Meet at the marsh entrance at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. The walk is sponsored by the N.J. Meadowlands Commission (NJMC) and the Bergen County Audubon Society (BCAS). Check meadowblog.net for last-minute weather updates. Participants will have to sign a standard liability release that is good for NJMC/BCAS events throughout the year. To RSVP call (201) 230-4983.

Palisades Medical Center honored with quality achievement awards

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association have recognized Palisades Medical Center with their Get With The Guidelines Gold-Plus Quality Achievement Awards for the Medical Center’s treatment of heart failure and stroke patients.
Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Palisades Medical Center’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks.
Get With The Guidelines-Stroke helps hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, research-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Palisades Medical Center earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include aggressive use of medications and risk-reduction therapies aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.
According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications and devices and with healthy lifestyle changes.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number four cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
