Community activist gets probation in Big Rig III conviction.

JERSEY CITY — Lavern Webb-Washington, a community activist in Jersey City, was sentenced to 18 months probation by U.S. District Judge Jose Linares after she had pled guilty to mail fraud in connection to taking cash from a federal informant in the 2009 Big Rig III operation. The one time council candidate has already paid back $13,500.
Webb-Washington, who is well-known for her positive contributions to Jersey City, was originally charged with accepting a $15,000 bribe from Solomon Dwek in exchange for her vote on a phony real estate deal. Dwek was operating as a federal informant at the time. But the charge was thrown out because she was not an elected official at the time.
Webb-Washington, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, will also have to pay a $250 fine as well as pay back the remaining $1,300 from the original bribe.
