Nursing home workers announce intention to strike

Workers at four nursing homes operated by Alaris Health facilities have given 10-day notice of their intention to engage in a three-day strike next week. The strikes will be held in Alaris’ Jersey City and Union City facilities from Tuesday, Sept. 16 to Thursday, Sept. 18, and at Guttenberg and Rochelle Park facilities from Wednesday, Sept. 17 to Friday, Sept. 19.
Employees of the facilities and union representatives have held numerous public rallies and community outreach events in all four locations over the past few months, protesting what they label “numerous unfair labor practices” by Alaris, and “unreasonable proposals which call for significant concessions from low wage workers, including higher health premiums costing hundreds a month for family coverage and a reduction in paid sick leave and other benefits for new hires.”
The most recent contract expired over five months ago, according to 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, which represents the 450 Alaris workers employed as licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistant, dietary aides, recreation aides, and housekeepers.
