A funeral mass was offered Sept. 2 at The Church of St. Ann for Katherine DeRose, 89. Known by all as “Katie,” she passed away Aug. 28 at the Villa Marie Claire in Saddle River. Katie was an expert at the game of poker and enjoyed many trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas. She was a member of the St. Mary Advocates Inc. (former St. Mary Hospital Ladies Auxiliary). As an avid bowler, Katie belonged to several mixed leagues at the famous “Adam Lanes”. Katie loved to knit and in doing so her finished product was a true work of art. As a form of relaxation Katie enjoyed reading and the challenge of a good crossword puzzle.
In 2002 she was overwhelmed by her visit to Monte San Giacomo, Italy where her parents were born and her ancestry evolved. Katie was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Rocky DeRose, who died in 1985. She was also predeceased by all of her siblings, brothers, Michael, Charlie, and Billy Spina; and sisters, Anna Gentile, Mary Tesoroni, Jennie Molaro, and RoseSpina. She leaves to survive her, two daughters, Trish and Kathy DeRose. Katie was the aunt of a host of nieces and nephews living and deceased. A devotee to St. Ann, Katie followed in the footsteps of her late parents, Matteo and Rosa (nee: Sansevere) Spina). Katie was also the grandmama to her yorkies, Jenipher and Chagall.
