A Bayonne firefighter was injured and three people were displaced following a blaze on West 26th Street on Tuesday, July 22, fire officials said.
At 10:52 a.m. the Bayonne Fire Department responded to a fire at 158 West 26th St.
Arriving firefighters were confronted with heavy smoke emanating from the basement and first floor of a two-story brick building, and fire in the basement, according to Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Companies advanced fire hoses and quickly extinguished a fire that managed to minimally spread to the second floor,” Rogers said.
While battling the blaze, one firefighter fell down a smoke-filled interior stairway to the basement and sustained injuries to this wrist, hip, and leg, according to Rogers. The firefighter was treated at Bayonne Medical Center and released.
Three occupants were temporarily displaced.
The first floor and basement received fire, smoke, and water damage.
The fire investigator’s preliminary report indicated that the fire originated in a laundry area of the basement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
