Free legal clinic for those with Superstorm Sandy issues
The Hudson County Long Term Recovery Committee is offering a Superstorm Sandy Free Legal Clinic on Wednesday, June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, 574 Summit Ave., Jersey City.
If you have a legal issue or issues due to Superstorm Sandy, you may be eligible to receive free legal counsel, advice, or brief services from attorneys from the Community Health Law Project, Legal Services of New Jersey, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, or Volunteer Lawyers for Justice.
To receive services, all issues must relate to Superstorm Sandy. Documents that attendees should bring with them are: correspondence with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, insurance policies and correspondence with insurers, leases and correspondence with landlords, and mortgages and recent mortgage statements.
To schedule an appointment, call (201) 792-6363, ext. 3248. Appointments are not necessary, but are encouraged; walk-ins may have to wait at the clinic.
Daniel Herrera gains membership to city and county Republican clubs
Daniel Herrera, former First Ward city council candidate who won nearly 11 percent of the vote his first time running, has been elected to the Hudson County Republican Party and gained membership to the Bayonne Republican Party.
“I’m honored to be a part of the Republican Party in Bayonne and in Hudson County,”
Herrera said. “I aim to work with our chairman, our leadership, our members, and with Bayonne residents to ensure the Republican Party is both approachable and competitive.”
Herrera has worked in the U.S. House of Representatives under Republican Congressman Robert Turner and for the Republican National Committee. He held the title of district chairman for Young Americans for Liberty and is currently the state director for the Blue Republican organization.
County sheriff: project medicine drop successful, to continue
Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari has announced that “Project Medicine Drop,” an initiative to remove expired and commonly abused prescription medicines and allow them to be properly disposed of, has been a great success and will continue.
“Project Medicine Drop has been a successful part of our efforts to get unused prescription medications away from those who might abuse them,” he said. “Our hope is (that) through programs like this, families and residents will begin to think differently about the drugs in their medicine cabinets and how to properly dispose of them.”
This program helps keep prescription drugs from falling into the hands of those who might make them available for abuse, and prevents them from being flushed into the water supply or thrown into the trash where they could contaminate the environment.
The Project Medicine Drop box is a lockable, metal container, resembling a mailbox and is located in the lobby of the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office at Hudson Plaza, 257 Cornelison Ave., Jersey City.

NJMC announces 2014 canoe tour season
The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission’s canoe tours of the Hackensack River will begin, giving visitors an up-close view of the wildlife of the Meadowlands while learning about the history of the river and the region.
The canoe season begins on Saturday, June 14, at 8:30 a.m. at Mill Creek Point Park in Secaucus.
Canoe tours last three hours and focus on the river’s marshes. Paddlers will learn the basics of salt marsh ecology and row past wetlands and down creeks.
Canoes hold up to three people, and at least one person should have canoeing experience. Requests for group trips are welcome. Due to the tours’ popularity, early reservations are recommended. Tours are $15 per person. Trips are for ages 10 and up.
Canoe trips also depart from River Barge Park, Carlstadt, and the Saw Mill Wildlife Management Area, Secaucus.
