Popowski, Cifuentes keep Blackhawks soaring

Playing their best hockey thus far, the (3-2) Blackhawks have turned an 0-2 start into a three game winning streak as they compete in the JCC of Bayonne’s Floor Hockey Jr. Division. After a fast start, the (2-2-1) Red Wings have come to a stand still with two consecutive loses. With the league’s two most potent offenses on the court, a shootout was expected but only the Blackhawks stayed true to form as they built a 4-0 lead with Roman Popowski (1 goal, 1 assist), Harsh Easwar (1 goal, 1 assist), Alejandro “See Ya” Cifuentes (2 goals, 1 assist), and Matt Miceli (1 assist) doing the heavy lifting. Needing a jump start, the Red Wings’ offense got a boost from Jake Peregrin and Sebastian Valles who each blasted goals with Victor Mendolaro and Peregrin notching assists. Watching their lead get cut in half at 4-2, the Blackhawks went on another scoring spree as Popowski, Peregrin, and Matt Miceli each railed in scoring shots while Aaliyana Cifuentes chipped in with her sixth assist of the season. Down 7-2, the Red Wings did their best to get back on track with Michael Egan taking over the goal tending duties while Michael “Stonewall” McCollum split the defensemen’s role with Jordan Neustein and Alejandra Valles. The defensive bolstering paid off as McCollum battled a pass to Jake Peregrin who zipped in his second goal of the bout for the Red Wings. Inspite of a late surge by the Red Wings’ the Blackhawks held on for a 7-3 victory as they tightened their grip on first place at (4-2).
