Dark city block in Bayonne may thrive with medical center

BAYONNE –The administration of Mayor Mark Smith announced on Wednesday afternoon, April 9, that a Florida developer of health facilities was interested in redeveloping a city block on Broadway, in the city’s central business district.

The Rendina Companies of Jupiter, Fla., was named as the area’s “designated redeveloper” of the west side of Broadway between West 23rd and 24th streets by the City Council, according to a statement issued by the city. The night before the Bayonne Planning Board had approved the redevelopment plan.

Most of the storefronts on the block are vacant, including those damaged by fire. Two retail shops currently exist.

The health care real estate firm hopes to build a three-story medical facility that would employ as many as 200 people.

Business Administrator Stephen Gallo said the facility would have a ripple effect on nearby businesses, with employees and patients projected to frequent area eateries and other stores.

A parking deck on Del Monte Drive behind the site is also under consideration.
