Bayonne, Union City, and Jersey City officials observe Greek Independence

HUDSON COUNTY — Bayonne officials paid tribute to the Greek heritage of city residents, observing Greek Independence Day on March 26 with brief indoor comments in the City Council chambers and then the raising of the Greek flag outside.
Mayor Mark Smith and council members joined representatives of the local Greek community.
“The mayor and City Council are very proud to raise your flag in front of city hall today,” said First Ward Councilwoman Agnes Gillespie.
The holiday celebrates the country’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. It is actually celebrated on March 25 in Greece.
