Amalgamated Transit Union endorses Mayor Mark Smith’s re-election
The Mark Smith for Mayor Campaign has been endorsed by the Amalgamated Transit Union International, the largest transportation union in the country, representing more than 190,000 members in 44 states.
“Mayor Mark Smith and his team believe in and share our core values,” said Amalgamated Transit Union International President Lawrence Hanley. “A community like Bayonne needs leadership that is committed to viable transportation choices and that stands up for working families. Mayor Smith represents those ideals to the fullest and we are proud to offer our endorsement and support for his re-election.”
Composed of bus drivers, light rail operators, maintenance and clerical personnel, and other transit and municipal employees, the ATU works to promote transit issues and fights for the interests of its members.

Midtown Community School Hosting card party/tricky tray
Midtown Community School’s Parent Teacher Organization is hosting a card party/tricky tray fundraiser on March 28th at the Chandelier Restaurant. In addition to prizes, there is a 50/50 cash raffle. “Hairspray being presented next month

LoRe Foundation holding dance party for cancer prevention
The Madeline Fiadini LoRe Foundation for Cancer Prevention will host the Annual “Dance Party 2014” for cancer prevention on Friday, April 11.
The Good & Plenty Orchestra will entertain with dance tunes from the 50s, 60s, and 70s from 7 to 11 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Community Hall, 39 East 22nd St. Donation is $100 per person and includes gourmet fare from local restaurants, beer, wine, soft drinks, and desserts.
“The dance party is an evening of great fun for a great cause,” said Madeline Fiadini LoRe. “There aren’t many opportunities to contribute to a valuable cause while having as much fun as we will have dancing and keeping fit.”

The foundation is focused on increasing awareness and providing for funding cancer screenings for the area’s underserved community. The foundation’s mission is to make cancer prevention programs available to the community by granting access to testing and/or screenings necessary for the prevention and early detection of various forms of cancer in men and women.
$1 book sale being hosted at Antler Lodge on Saturday
Bayonne Antler Lodge 15 will host a book sale on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Bayonne Elks club, 364 Broadway, between 16th and 17th streets.
All types of books will be available, including hardcover, paperback, college texts, children’s books, cookbooks, and self help. No book is more than $1.
“There is something for everyone,” said a spokeswoman.
Proceeds will benefit the Antler charities, which include Special Children, Drug Awareness, and Veterans Committee.
“These children, a young subdivision of the Bayonne Elks, support the community however they can,” the spokeswoman said. “Come in, take a look, buy a book, and support them.”
Refreshments will be available.
Commission asking residents to complete Hurricane Sandy survey
The Hudson Regional Health Commission has received a grant to conduct a health and
well being needs assessment for those in Hudson County affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The commission is also conducting focus groups regarding the storm. Participants are encouraged to share any Sandy-related experiences. Transportation costs will be reimbursed.

Bayonne Chamber hosting spring fundraiser
The Bayonne Chamber of Commerce will hold its 1st Wine & Food Tasting Event on Thursday, April 3, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at R&B’z Restaurant, 234 Broadway.

Elks Club brings back trophy
The New Jersey State Elks Association held its annual State Ritual contest, a recitation and performance competition, in Long Branch on Feb. 23, and Bayonne Elks Lodge # 434 brought back the third place trophy.
Bayonne was one of the 113 Elks Lodges in the state competing at the Long Branch Elks Lodge.
“Bayonne Elks Lodge 434 is proud to return home with this great accomplishment,” a spokeswoman said.
In the individual contests, the lodge members excelled as well.
Exalted Ruler Walt Schember took second place; Tiffany Pawlowski, third place; Karen Minutella, third place; and Mike Collins second place. Michele Matos moves on to the all-state candidate competition.
This was the first time in years that the Bayonne team placed within the top three in the region. It will be moving on to statewide competition.
