Narcotics and firearms seized in Jersey City
Mayor Steven Fulop and the Jersey City Department of Public Safety announced 81 narcotics arrests and the seizure of four firearms during a six-week special operation in Greenville section of Jersey City.
Feb. 1 to March 14, the police department deployed a dozen officers from its Special Investigations Unit, as well as officers from the citywide Narcotics Squad and the South District Narcotics Squad to the south Greenville area in the area of Lembeck Avenue, Winfield Avenue, Rutgers Avenue, Myrtle Avenue, Gates Avenue, Van Nostrand Avenue, and Bayside Park.
“The success of this operation lies in the new relationship our district commanders are developing with our community groups,” said Mayor Fulop. “By working closely together, not only are we are learning about their concerns, but we are also gaining valuable information that can help us as we deploy officers and attack public safety and quality of life issues.”
Several of the arrests made were the result of surveillance of a residence on Winfield Avenue near Ocean Avenue, where a large quantity of narcotics and drug paraphernalia was recovered. Arrests were also made at a Lembeck Avenue residence, near Ocean Avenue, where narcotics were also recovered.
The areas the Police Department has been working closely with such neighborhood groups as the Van Nostrand Avenue Block Association, the Bayside Park Neighborhood Association and the South Greenville Block Association.
Public meetings on travel alternatives during Pulaski Skyway closure
The northbound lanes of the Pulaski Skyway will close starting April 12 for approximately two years.
NJDOT’s project team is hosting public meetings on travel alternatives. They will be available to discuss the project and answer questions. The PIC will take place noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City.
The existing deck of the 3.5-mile long structure that carries Route 1&9 traffic will be replaced during this phase of the rehabilitation project. Southbound travel on the Skyway will be maintained during construction. Route 139, which is just east of the Skyway, will maintain one lower level travel lane east toward New York and two travel lanes west toward Newark at all times (except nights and weekends) while the Pulaski Skyway northbound is closed.
NJDOT created a project-specific website, www.pulaskiskyway.com, which contains a wealth of information about the Skyway project, including construction updates and information specifically about the Hoboken and Conrail Viaduct rehabilitation.
DOT in conjunction with the city will hold two additional special community meetings to discuss the project. The first meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 at the Hank Gallo Community Center at Lincoln Park. The second community meeting will held at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 31 at Middle School #7, 222 Laidlaw Avenue.
Survey on Sandy hurricane aftermath
Hudson Regional Health Commission has received a grant to conduct a health and well-being needs assessment for residents and business owners in Hudson County affected by Superstorm Sandy. Residents and business owners in Hudson County are encouraged to complete as short survey about the impacts. This includes, but is not limited to, those who were victims of flooding, power loss, or are experiencing stress from the storm. Through this survey Hudson Regional hope to gain insight on the types of unmet needs that exist in the community and will then develop a plan to connect individuals to the services they may need for recovery.

CarePoint establishes scholarship
The CarePoint Health Foundation recently established a College Scholarship Program to assist financially challenged residents of Hudson County pursuing an education in the health care field. On Wednesday, March 19, 2014, three $10,000 scholarship checks were presented to Saint Peter’s University, Hudson County Community College and New Jersey City University. Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D. – President of Saint Peter’s University, Joseph Sansone –Vice President of Development of Hudson County Community College Foundation and Sue Henderson, Ph.D. – President of New Jersey City University were present to accept the scholarships funds. Two students at each of the institutions will be the recipients of a $5,000 scholarship check.
Fundraiser for concert for Temple Beth-El
Lauren Shrug and the Ilya Maslov Jazz Trio will be conducted a concert to benefit Temple Beth-El, 2149 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City (corner of Kennedy and Harrison). This is to help raise money to repair the roof of the beautiful, architecturally-significant building on Kennedy Boulevard. Surrogate judge to speak at JCMC
Hudson County Surrogate Donald DeLeo will be addressing the stroke victims and caregivers at the Jersey City Medical Center on Tuesday, March 26 at 6 p. m. on updated information on wills, living will, living trusts and stories from the Surrogate’s court. JCMC is located at 355 Grand Street in Jersey City.
