HOBOKEN — The Hoboken Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses to attend a meeting with city officials on Thursday morning to discuss a potential plan to combat flooding.
The meeting will be held Thursday, March 6, at 8 a.m. at Amanda’s Restaurant, 908 Washington St.
A team of professionals led by the firm OMA is partnering with the city to develop a strategy to protect the city from flooding. This team is one of 10 finalists in the Rebuild by Design competition which ends in late March. Winning projects will be announced in April, and federal disaster recovery funds and private funding are available to implement selected proposals.
OMA’s design proposal titled “Resist, Delay, Store, Discharge: a Comprehensive Strategy for Hoboken” employs a multi-pronged approach to address Hoboken’s historic flooding challenge and increasing threats from rising seas and stronger storms. The strategy uses both hard infrastructure and soft landscape for coastal defense (resist), recommends policies to enable the urban fabric to slow down water (delay), and includes a green circuit to trap water (store) and water pumps to support drainage (discharge). The ideas include waterfront parks that can protect from a storm surge from the Hudson River. Green infrastructure such as rain gardens and parks would delay or prevent storm water from entering the sewer system. And a green circuit around the perimeter of Hoboken could store excess water that would be ejected with flood pumps.
