A funeral mass was offered Feb. 15 at St. Aloysius Church, Jersey City, for John A. Mateo, 60, of Jersey City. He passed away Feb. 8. Born in Jersey City, he was a lifelong resident. John was a U.S. Marines Veteran, honorably serving his country from 1970 – 1972. He was a decorated sharpshooter. He went on to a long career in the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1994 as an acting supervisor. From 1996-2001 he served as a member of the Civil Air Patrol with the Air Force Auxiliary. John was known for his take-charge attitude and being a community activist. He was heavily involved with PACO as an outreach worker. A car enthusiast, John also loved music especially, oldies, salsa and Motown.
He was predeceased by his parents Elias and Teresa Mateo. He was the father of John (Adriana) Mateo, Michael (Tesha) Mateo, Genevieve (Faycal) Belhamidi and Steven Mateo, brother of Louis Mejias, Carmen Acosta, Elias Mateo, Jr., Maria Ruiz and the late Jose Raymond Mateo, grandfather of 8. He is also survived by many other relatives, friends, and his companion Kiwi. Services arranged by the Introcaso-Angelo Funeral Home, Jersey City.
