SCAFIDI, MARJORIE

A funeral mass was celebrated Jan. 21 at St. Joseph’s Church for Marjorie Scafidi, 93, of Jersey City. She passed away Jan. 17 surrounded by her family. Marjorie “Margie” was born in Berthold, N.D., the eldest daughter of six children to Joe and Winnie Matzdorf (predeceased). When she was a child, her family relocated to Montana, secondary to failure of the family farm in North Dakota. Margie worked throughout her childhood and teenage years on the Montana family farm as well as working as a nanny and housekeeper and working many summers at Glacier National Park with her sister Phyllis.
When Margie was in her early twenties, she relocated to find work, this time to Washington State. It was at Fort Lewis in Tacoma where Margie met and fell in love with her husband John Scafidi, a young Army sergeant from Jersey City. Once married, they returned to Jersey City to share their lives together. Together they worked and owned the Family Market Fruit and Vegetable store for over 60 years. Also, for many years, they served their Sterling Avenue neighborhood as committee people. However, Margie’s greatest joy was raising her six children and two grandchildren. Once her children were grown, Margie traveled the world with her husband, always returning home with gifts and stories to tell.
Margie was predeceased by her husband John, daughter Joann and brother Darryl. She is survived by her five children, John, Gino “Eugene”, Judith “Judy”, Gerard “Jerry” and Janette; two daughters-in-law, Angela and Marcelina “Marcy”; two grandchildren Patrice and John and his wife Lauren (Margie’s newest grandchild); three sisters, Phyllis Matzdorf, Ethelmae Billedeaux, Gladys Anderson; brother Joseph “Pat” Matzdorf, sister-in-law Maria “Mary” Scafidi as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
