UNION CITY – Although no one was injured, more than 60 people were displaced by a six-alarm fire that started in one building on 19th Street in Union City at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. The fire spread to two other buildings before it was extinguished.
Union City Mayor Brian Stack is seeking donations to help some of the fire victims who were temporarily housed from the cold by the Red Cross.
The fire occurred in the 500 block of 19th Street forcing many people out onto the street in the sub-freezing temperatures, many of whom were underdressed.
Stack said check donations should be made to the Union City Fire Victims’ Fund and sent in care of the Mayor’s Office, 3715 Palisade Avenue, Union City, NJ 07087.
All collected monies will be dispersed to fire victims for assistance in acquiring essential materials. — By Al Sullivan
