Thousands of North Bergen students participated in the Second Annual North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) ‘Go Green, Save Green’ poster contest. Winning posters were chosen because they demonstrated the concept of saving money through recycling.
First, second, and third place winners were voted on by members of the North Bergen MUA for each grade category. Three pieces of artwork were selected from each of the following grade levels: grade 1 through 3; grade 4 through 6; grade 7 through 8; and grade 9 through 12.
Prizes include: winning artwork featured on one month of North Bergen MUA Calendar, a party with Mayor Sacco to celebrate the winners, eReaders, and $100 and $50 gift certificates.
Contest grand prize winner Catherine Castellon was selected from the 12 winners as the student artist who best illustrated the ‘Go Green, Save Green’ concept. Her winning artwork is featured on the calendar’s cover and on the side of a North Bergen MUA recycling truck. In addition, she will receive an Apple iPad.
The contest began in October, in honor of America Recycles Day. The North Bergen MUA 2014 ‘Go Green, Save Green’ calendars will be distributed to North Bergen Schools.

Volunteers needed at New Jersey Blood Services

New Jersey Blood Services, which supplies blood products and services to 60 hospitals throughout the state, is in need of volunteers at blood drives.
“The blood service volunteer is an integral member of the collection team, whose task it is to assist donors with registration, escorting, and canteen duties, and to watch for post-donation reactions,” said R. Jan Zepka, manager of community relations.
Volunteers should have the ability to relate to the public, be able to perform different jobs as needed, and have the willingness to follow rules.
