DOSTAL, MILOS ANTHONY

A funeral mass was held Dec. 20 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Hoboken for Milos Anthony Dostal of Hoboken. He passed away Dec. 13 at his home. Born in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1939, Milos came to the United States in 1966 and settled in Hoboken two years later. He had a long and productive career at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, where he served as head of the Mathematics Department for a number of years. Before coming to Stevens, he taught first at the University of Montreal in Canada and then at the University of Strasbourg in France. Later, he was a visiting professor at the University of Recife in Brazil. After receiving his Master’s in Mathematics at Charles University in Prague, he earned his Ph.D. at the Mathematical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, following which he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at NYU. Milos was keenly interested in fine arts and classical music and enjoyed playing piano, in particular the works of Frederic Chopin. Milos travelled extensively throughout his life and spoke numerous foreign languages. Milos is survived by his wife, Jole; his son Maurice; his daughter-in-law Grainne Molloy, and his grandson Maximilian Dostal. Services arranged by the Evergreen Funeral Home, Jersey City.
