STATEWIDE — Gov. Chris Christie released a statement this afternoon after newspapers revealed emails and texts that hint at a widening scandal in his administration:
“What I’ve seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions.”
The statement came after the Star Ledger, Record, and other newspapers printed texts and emails suggesting that state officials may have planned lane closures near the George Washington Bridge in order to tie up traffic in Fort Lee, perhaps to get back at the borough’s mayor, who failed to support Christie’s re-election bid.
Jokes about the growing scandal have already popped up on the internet, on the order of: “If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you,” and “Gov. Christie threw his aides under a bus, but the bus is stuck in traffic.”
