JERSEY CITY — Water has been restored to most of downtown Jersey City, said officials from United Water after the company discovered a water main break near Jersey City Medical Center.
Water tanker trucks were sent to Jersey City Medical Center at 355 Grand Street in Jersey City, for customers to fill clean, empty containers with water if they are without.
Responding to customer calls of low water pressure or no water in the downtown area, on Dec. 18, emergency crews worked to pinpoint the area where the leak is located, formulating a repair plan.
Water had been seen pouring out of storm drains near Coles and Sixth streets. Students were let go early and the downtown area is still under an advisory to boil water as a precaution before using it to cook or drink.
United Water said that the problem was a break in a 12-inch water man at the intersection of Grove and Grand streets. A problem with a broken fire hydrant apparently caused a water pressure build up that resulted in additional leaks along the Coles Street water line.
The company said that about 15,000 to 20,000 people were affected. – By Al Sullivan
