HOBOKEN — Media sources reported on Monday evening that attorney Dustin Friedland of Hoboken, who was shot to death at the Short Hills Mall on Sunday by two carjackers, died after he refused to give the men the keys to the car.
According to the reports, the two men confronted Friedland after he and his wife returned to their car after shopping at the mall. Friedland’s wife, Jamie, had already gotten into the silver Range Rover when the men demanded the keys, according to one news report that cited a source close to the investigation.
Friedland struggled with the men and was shot in the head. The men ordered his wife out of the car, then drove off in it. Friedland died in the wee hours of Monday morning. The car was found on Monday behind a house in Newark.
The young couple were married in October of 2011 and lived in a Park Avenue condo. According to Friedland’s Facebook page, he was a member of the Hoboken Harriers running club and grew up in Toms River.
News of the shooting at the upscale mall, during the height of the holiday shopping season, has ignited much media interest. On Monday, news organizations swarmed the building where the couple lived. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies continued to hunt for the suspects.
On the internet, controversy arose over media outlets printing the couple’s address. In addition, many commenters complained that the newspapers failed to print a description of the attackers, with some commenters using racial epithets in their remarks.
