HANGING UP HER WHISTLE

It’s the last buzzer for Coach Mary Borrello-Cerreta after 44 years of coaching girls’ basketball in Bayonne. She started her career at St. Andrew’s Grammar School in 1970 back when there were no organized teams for public school students. Coach Cerreta has spent the past 25 years coaching the Lady Royals of Dr. Walter F. Robinson Elementary School. During her time at Robinson School, she has logged thousands of hours in the school’s gymnasium teaching hundreds of female athletes the sport of basketball.
Recently, more than 60 alumni from the early 1990s to this year’s varsity surprised their former and present coach by attending a recent game. The memories acame flooding back as Coach Cerreta greeted her athletes and their families. The evening’s festivities concluded with a surprise dinner planned by her daughter, Catherine Cerreta.
