HOBOKEN – A fire that broke out on the top floors of an Adams Street apartment building shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday afternoon was brought under control by 3, according to officials on the scene. Heavy black smoke that residents reported seeing coming from the building when the fire began had all but subsided and there were no reported injuries.
Engines from the Hoboken and Jersey City fire departments responded to the blaze at 327 Adams St., which was reported by a resident of the building’s top floor who called 911 when she returned home to a smoke-filled apartment, said Ken Ferrante, who coordinates the city’s Office of Emergency Management.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, said Ferrante. It is also unclear how many of the building’s nine units were affected by the blaze. The fire seems to have been concentrated on the top two floors of the building, where firefighters could be seen inside and the windows had been broken. Firefighters were also present on the building’s roof.
Crowds gathered from the surrounding neighborhood to survey the fire, and some neighbors offered their homes as a shelter for building’s residents, some of whom were present at the scene but declined to comment on the fire. – Dean DeChiaro
