Mayor Felix E. Roque and the West New York Board of Commissioners have announced that the improvements to Fillmore and Dewey Parks have been selected as the First Place Recipient in the Municipal Parks/Recreation Projects “D” Category by the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers.
David J. Samuel, municipal engineer, and the mayor received the award at the League of Municipalities Conference on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the Atlantic City Convention Center.
“This is only the beginning of my efforts to improve the parks and other recreational areas throughout the town,” Mayor Roque said. “I am honored by the award, but more importantly, I was happy to see all the residents that were able to use the parks this summer.”
Ribbon cuttings for the rehabilitated parks took place in May and June. The spaces were improved with multi-million dollar Community Development Block Grants.
Samuel managed and supervised the parks’ renovations in order to provide West New Yorkers with spaces to relax and rediscover their love for their town.
Fillmore had been in need of renovation for some time, and has been transformed into an urban oasis for West New Yorkers with two giant pelicans that spray water over summer bathers, two brand new jungle gyms, stone chess tables, new landscaping, and brand new security cameras.
Dewey, a long-abandoned space, has been transformed into an urban oasis, replete with chess and water spray areas and a brand new jungle gym.
Additional plans are under way to improve the municipal pool, Miller Park and Washington Park in the next year.
