WEEHAWKEN — Depression-era painter Edward Hopper liked to conjure lonely scenes, such as a view inside the windows of a New York apartment, or a quiet street corner. In 1934, he painted the corner of 49th Street and Boulevard East in Weehawken.
Now, Christie’s auction house is set to sell the painting, “East Wind over Weehawken,” for $22 to $28 million on Dec. 5.
The street corner and houses pictured still exist, although they don’t appear as dreamy and pastel as in Hopper’s version.
And if you can’t afford the price, there’s a way to get a similar painting and help out the Weehawken schools.
Brooklyn-based artist Stephen Gardner has painted a modern-day version that will sell on eBay this Nov. 30 to raise money for the Weehawken PTPA. It will be sold by PTPA member (and comedian) Susie Felber. Felber also intends to sell post cards and prints of the new painting outside Christie’s.
