BAYONNE – A move that would have allowed voters to elected Board of Education members for the first time since the mid-1970s failed to get the required signatures that would put it on the Nov. 5 ballot.
The group called Bayonne School Board Choice needed 845 registered voters, or 15 percent of the last general election. The group submitted 1,113, but only 669 were considered valid because a number of those who signed were not registered voters, officials said.
Some teachers in the midst of a four year battle with the current appointed school board had vowed to move to an elected board as a way of getting more accountability to the public.
Teachers have been working without a contract for more than three years.
