BAYONNE – Noted author Thomas Fleming, a American historian and historical novelist, will talk about the Frank Hague era in his talk “From Jersey City to the White House,” at a program to be held at the Bayonne Public Library at 7 p.m. on Sept. 17.
Fleming will focus on the period in time when Jersey City Hague promised and delivered the votes to guarantee that Democratic leaders such as Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman could reach the White House.
Fleming was born in Jersey City, the son of an Irish-American World War I hero who was a leader in Jersey City politics for three decades, starting in the 1920s, when Hudson County was dominated by Frank Hague’s political machine. After graduating from St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, Fleming spent a year in the United States Navy. Afterward, he received a Bachelor’s degree, with honors, from Fordham University. After brief stints as a newspaperman and magazine editor, he became a full-time writer in 1960.
